Live Women’s Beanpot updates: Record crowd of 3,298 cheers Northeastern to victory

The crowd was the largest to watch a women’s hockey game at Matthews Arena. The Huskies will play BU in the final at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at TD Garden.

  1. Record crowd watches Northeastern defeat rival Boston College, 4-2

    Northeastern used a potent offensive attack, stingy defense and strong goaltending to defeat rival Boston College, 4-2, to advance to the final of the 46th Women’s Beanpot.

    The Huskies (14-6-1) will play Boston University (13-6-2) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at TD Garden. 

    The crowd of 3,298 was the largest ever to watch a Northeastern women’s hockey game at Matthews Arena and the largest crowd for a Women’s Beanpot campus game.

    The Huskies (14-6-1) will play Boston University (13-6-2) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at TD Garden. 

    The championship is a rematch of the 2024 final won by Northeastern, 2-1, in overtime. 

    The Huskies have won a record 19 Beanpots.

    Boston College (14-7-1) will face Harvard (2-12-3) in the consolation game at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

  2. Northeastern coach Dave Flint on the record crowd…

    In his postgame press conference, Northeastern coach Dave Flint said the record crowd played a big part in the Huskies’ win.

    “The biggest thing that helped us was the crowd,” he said. “In 17 years I’ve never seen a crowd like that here at Matthews — and so credit to all our fans who came out and supported us, really pushed the team and helped us get the win.

    “It gave me chills there at the beginning,” he said. “I was just really, really proud of the university for stepping up.”

  3. Game summary: Who scored the goals for the Huskies?

    Morgan Jackson, Taze Thompson, Tory Mariano and Lily Shannon scored, and Skylar Irving added two assists for the Huskies.

    Mariano, Shannon, Eloise Caron, Jules Constantinople, Tuva Kandell, Gaby Roy and Abby Newhook also had assists for Northeastern.

    Freshman Lisa Jönsson made 37 saves in her Women’s Beanpot debut.

  10. Shannon’s shorthanded goal gives Huskies 4-1 lead

    Lily Shannon’s shorthanded goal with 4:34 left in the second period has given the Huskies a 4-1 lead over the Eagles.

    Shannon’s eighth goal of the season, assisted by Skylar Irving, came with Morgan Jackson serving a tripping penalty.

    As the final buzzer sounded, Northeastern skated off the Matthews Arena ice 20 minutes away from defending its Beanpot title next Tuesday at TD Garden.

    Huskies freshman goalie Lisa Jonsson was spectacular in the second period, making 11 saves.

    BC goalie Grace Campbell made 10 stops.

  13. Huskies lead Eagles, 3-1, in second period

    At the game’s midpoint, Northeastern still leads Boston College, 3-1.

    The action has been back and forth in the second period with the Huskies outshooting the Eagles, 8-5.

    Backed by a strong defense, Lisa Jonsson has been sharp for Northeastern, including a spectacular pad stop of an Abby Newhook rebound shot.

  16. Huskies lead Eagles, 3-1, as second period gets underway

    The second period is underway here at Matthews Arena with the Huskies leading the Eagles, 3-1.

    The winner will advance to next Tuesday’s final against Boston University at TD Garden.

  17. Huskies lead Eagles, 3-1, after the first period

    After being dominated by Northeastern for most of the first period, Boston College scored with 18 seconds left to make it 3-1 Huskies.

    BC’s Sammy Taber and Gaby Roy traded passes on a 2-on-1 break with Taber sliding the puck past Northeastern goalie Lisa Jonsson.

    Torry Mariano, Morgan Jackson and Taze Thompson have the Huskies’ goals.

    Northeastern is outshooting BC, 12-8, with most of the Eagles’ chances coming in the final minutes.

  20. Wow! Mariano’s first goal of season makes it 3-0 Huskies

    And just like that it’s 3-0 Huskies!

    With BC’s Alanna Devlin in the penalty box for hooking, Tory Mariano scored Northeastern’s third goal at 14:02 of the first period.

    Mariano’s first goal of the season was assisted by Lily Shannon and Tuva Kandell.

    The Huskies are outshooting the Eagles, 10-3.

  23. Jackson and Thompson give Huskies 2-0 lead

    That was quick!

    Goals by Morgan Jackson and Taze Thompson 56 seconds apart have given Northeastern a 2-0 lead.

    Morgan’s goal was assisted by Eloise Caron and Tory Mariano.

    Thompson’s goal came after Boston College goalie Grace Campbell kicked a shot from the blue line to the high slot.

    Skylar Irving and Jules Constantinople were credited with the assists.

  26. Huskies, Eagles scoreless midway through first period

    We are midway through the first period here at Matthews Arena and Northeastern has had the better offensive chances so far.

    The best was a 2-on-1 break by Morgan Jackson and Éloïse Caron, but Caron couldn’t convert the one-timer from the left post.

    That was followed by a hard wrist shot by Tuva Kandell.

    The Huskies killed the game’s first penalty, the result a Jules Constantinople boarding penalty 1:22 in. BC managed only one shot on the power play.

    Northeastern goalie Lisa Jonsson has two saves, both routine.

  30. Huskies and Eagles about to get underway

    It’s almost game time!

    Northeastern and Boston College are minutes away from getting underway here at Matthews Arena.

    The Huskies (13-6-1) are wearing their home red jerseys, while the Eagles (14-6-1) are dressed in their road whites.

    The DogHouse, Northeastern’s balcony student section, is filled to capacity.

    The winner will face Boston University in the final next Tuesday.

    Skylar Irving, last year’s Beanpot hero, and Éloïse Caron, a freshman from Saint-Hyacinthe, Québec, lead the Huskies with 17 points each.

    Seventh-ranked BC defeated 12th-ranked Northeastern, 3-0, on Oct. 30.

  32. Boston University 2, Harvard 1 (OT): Terriers advance to final

    Lindsay Bochna’s goal 1:17 into overtime gave Boston University a 2-1 win over Harvard in the first semifinal.

    The Terriers will play the Northeastern-Boston College winner in the final next Tuesday at TD Garden, while the Crimson will face the loser in the consolation game.

    Both teams scored in the third period. Angelica Megdanis gave the Crimson a 1-0 lead 1:42 in, while Sydney Healey pulled the Terriers even with 55 seconds left.

    Ainsley Tuffy made 39 saves for Harvard. Callie Shanahan made 10 stops for BU.

    The final will be played next Tuesday at TD Garden.

    Northeastern defeated Havard, 1-0, in the semifinals before beating BU, 2-1, in overtime before 10,633 fans at TD Garden — a record for women’s hockey in New England.

    Skylar Irving’s second goal of the game 27 seconds into OT was assisted by Megan Carter and Katy Knoll.

    ‘We need the fans behind us.’

    Huskies coach Dave Flint says the home crowd always gives his team a boost.

    “Our team gets fired up because we have the best fans in women’s college hockey,” Flint says. “And for our players, that’s what we’re gonna need on Tuesday to be successful. We need the fans behind us. They’re a big part and they’re critical to our success.”
