OAKLAND, Calif. — Hundreds of students from the Bay Area and around the world will move onto Northeastern University’s campus in Oakland, California, on Saturday, Aug. 30, and Sunday, Aug. 31.

Depending upon their housing assignments, first-year students will arrive either Aug. 30  or Aug. 31., between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Approximately 760 first-year students will move in over the weekend.

On Aug. 31, returning students and graduate students will check in between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

For students arriving after 5 p.m., security gate staff will call a member of the residential life staff, who will greet the student and check them into their room.

Once settled, students will participate in orientation, convocation, Welcome Days and ongoing academic and extracurricular activities.

Here’s everything you need to know — frequently asked questions and answers — about moving onto the Oakland campus.

How will I get to campus?

Students and their families are welcome to drive to campus. Volunteers will be ready to greet them there. For students using public transportation, rideshare services are the best bet when traveling to campus from Bay Area airports in Oakland and San Francisco. The AC Transit 57 line bus stops right in front of campus on MacArthur Boulevard.

What is orientation?

Student orientation will take place Monday, Sept. 1, and Tuesday, Sept. 2.

During this time, students will be introduced to all parts of campus life from academics to extracurricular activities.

There will be sessions on wellness, student engagement, living in the community and resources, as well as a resource and campus job fair. Advising appointments will be available. Students are also encouraged to attend a student leadership session to learn more about student government, clubs and organizations.

Parents are invited to attend parents’ orientations, which will take place in the evenings of Saturday, Aug. 3,0, and Sunday, Aug. 31.

What is convocation?

Convocation is an event held at the beginning of every academic year to introduce new undergraduate students on all campuses to the university.

This year, the Oakland campus convocation will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 2, in Littlefield Concert Hall.

Welcome Days

Community activities will begin the first night. On Saturday, Aug. 30, students are invited to play glow-in-the-dark games. On Sunday, Aug. 31, an “around the world” activity will take place in the Rothwell Theater where students can put a pin for their hometown on a map and taste foods from around the world.

Other events include yoga on the meadow and leadership training. On Labor Day, students can enjoy food from Oakland restaurants at a Taste of Oakland event with music and a visit from players on the Oakland Roots professional soccer club.

There will also be campus tours, open gym hours, music and outdoor games.

Weeks of Welcome

In addition to Welcome Days, the Oakland campus also has Weeks of Welcome planned from Sept. 3-14.

The schedule of events includes a club and community fair, group fitness events, pool party, drop-in intramural sports and opportunities to explore Oakland.

Some housing information

The Reuse Depot is a free shop on campus offering dorm room supplies, clothing and other necessities. The Depot will be open when students arrive and is a good place to go for free storage, lighting and other essentials.

All dining and food service facilities will be open when students arrive.

First-year undergraduate students are required to live in university housing unless a residency waiver request is approved.

There is no curfew for on-campus housing. Exterior doors are always locked and each resident has their own key and/or keycard.

Housing staff will host community meetings within the first weeks after orientation.

Students do not have to move out for any breaks during the academic year, including winter and spring break. Dining services will also remain open.
