Natural shoreline barriers on US coasts play a key role in protecting coastal communities from storms like Hurricane Dorian

Natural barrier habitats such as marshes, mangroves, and dunes along coastlines can help protect coastal communities from storm surges like the ones expected as Dorian approaches the East Coast, says Steven Scyphers, an assistant professor of marine and environmental sciences at Northeastern.

Northeastern, Nature Conservancy team up to tackle climate change, save coastal cities

The partnership will include the creation of a position for a postdoctoral fellow who will work to help save coastal communities from the effects of rising sea levels and other environmental threats. “Forget about mitigation,” said Geoff Trussell, the director of Northeastern’s Coastal Sustainability Institute. “We need to adapt.”
