The start of this semester brings with it a number of must-see campus events, including a performance by Hamilton star Renée Elise Goldsberry and a series on the global food system.

Getting involved

With more than 350 student organizations on campus, there’s something for everyone at Northeastern. Here are a couple opportunities to learn more.

On Monday, Jan. 9, learn how to get more involved in the university’s LGBTQA community with Queer in the NU Year, which begins at 5 p.m. in room 346 of the Curry Student Center.

On Tuesday, Jan. 10, make your way to the 2017 Winter Involvement Fair to hear from representatives of some of the many student organizations on campus. The fair is from 5 to 7 p.m. throughout the Curry Student Center.

Going global

Northeastern’s Global Experience Office is hosting events on Wednesday, Jan. 11, Thursday, Jan. 12, and Thursday, Jan. 19, where students can learn more about available global experiential learning opportunities.

At 6 p.m. on Jan. 11 and 12, attend Dialogue of Civilizations panel sessions to hear from faculty across the university’s colleges.

And starting at 11 a.m. on Jan. 19, you can walk through the Dialogue of Civilizations Fair in the Curry Student Center, where you can also enter for a chance to win a $1,000 scholarship toward any Dialogue of Civilizations program.

Myra Kraft Open Classroom

Throughout the spring semester, the Myra Kraft Open Classroom series will explore the food system both domestically and globally, focusing particularly on health, equity, and sustainability. The semesterlong seminar series is free and open to the Northeastern community and the public. The first class of the fall semester will be held Wednesday, Jan. 11, at 6 p.m.

Commemorate Martin Luther King Jr.

The annual commemoration of the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. will comprise a series of events taking place from Monday, Jan. 16, to Tuesday, Jan. 24. The cornerstone event, “A Tribute to the Dream,” will take place at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17, in Blackman Auditorium.

At the event, Tony and Grammy award-winning actress Renée Elise Goldsberry—perhaps best known for her role as Angelica Schuyler Church in the Broadway musical Hamilton—will honor the late civil rights leader with a performance and keynote address.

Other events throughout the week include the MLK Day of Service and Leadership, starting at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 16; a screening of the 2014 historical drama film Selena at 7 p.m. the same day; and a discussion titled “Civil Rights Today and Strategies for the Future” at 11:45 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19.

Throughout the week, Gallery 360 will feature the paintings—on loan from the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists—by artists Marilene Phipps and Diane Westbrook.

More information and a full schedule of events can be found at northeastern.edu/mlk.

The future is yours

The annual Senior Career Conference, on Friday, Jan. 20, is a chance for seniors, as well as juniors and recent graduates, to plot out their futures beyond Northeastern. The conference-style event offers attendees the chance to choose three programs—whose options include roundtable discussions, employer panels, and one-on-one meetings with employers—in which to participate throughout the day. The conference begins at 11:30 a.m., and registration is encouraged.

Holocaust Awareness Week

Northeastern’s annual weeklong commemoration brings the community together to publicly remember the Holocaust, not only as a historical fact but also as a memorial to its millions of victims.

This year’s slate of events starts on Monday, Jan. 23, at 4:30 p.m. with commemoration presentations in the Cabral Center. Other events throughout the week include a speech by Anna Ornstein, author of My Mother’s Eyes: Holocaust Memories of a Young Girl, on Tuesday, Jan. 24; a screening of the film What Our Fathers Did: A Nazi Legacy on Wednesday, Jan. 25; and the 25th annual Robert Salomon Morton Lecture on Thursday, Jan. 26.
