Photo by Adam Glanzman/Northeastern University Homecoming 2016 has something for everyone, from the sports fan and music aficionado to the political junkie and community-conscious humanitarian. Here is a day-by-day rundown of some of the activities and events happening this week. Monday, Nov. 7 Who should be the next Mayor of Huntington Avenue? On Monday at 7 p.m. in Blackman Auditorium, you will have the opportunity to hear from the candidates themselves as they deliver impassioned statements, field questions from the audience, and compete in a series of minute-to-win-it style challenges. Tickets for the event are available through myNEU. Tuesday, Nov. 8 Get a crash course in cooking on Tuesday at noon in Xhibition Kitchen. Cal Peternell, an artist turned cook, will be giving a free cooking demo and signing copies of his new book A Recipe for Cooking. Later in the day, after you’ve honed your cooking prowess, drop by the Curry Student Center Ballroom for an election night watch party. The event—including free food, giveaways, and election-themed activities—will begin at 7:30 p.m. If politics isn’t your thing, rock out with some of Northeastern’s most talented musicians at the 5th annual Homecoming Battle of the Bands. The competition will be held in afterHours at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9 Wednesday is Husky Spirit Day. Show your Northeastern pride by wearing red and black and sharing your festive photos on social media. Tweet your pictures to @HomecomingNU or post them to Instagram @HomecomingNortheastern or the HomecomingNU Facebook page. Don’t forget to use the #HomecomingNU hashtag. Be sure to wear red and black to the Homecoming Festival, which will take place from noon to 2 p.m. in the Curry Student Center Indoor Quad. Eat free food, play games, and stuff your very own toy Husky. Before you go to bed, bring your hungry Husky spirit to the Stetson West dining hall for “Late Night at Northeastern.” A meal swipe is required for entry into the event, which will run from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., during which there will be food, music, activities, and giveaways. Thursday, Nov. 10 Amy Poehler—the Emmy Award-winning actress and former star of NBC’s Parks and Recreation—is headlining Homecoming 2016. For those lucky enough to have purchased tickets before they were sold out, Poehler will be speaking at Matthews Arena on Thursday at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11 Friday will mark Homecoming’s Day of Service. There are two projects to choose from, for which limited spots are available. The first, dubbed the “Breakfast Club,” will give you the opportunity to roll up your sleeves and clean up parts of Columbus Avenue or the Fenway. You will check in to the Fenway Center at 10:30 a.m. and then volunteer from 11 a.m. to noon. Following the cleanup, breakfast will be served. If you volunteer for the second project, “Huskies for Hunger,” you will be helping to package 15,000 meals for children in the Boston Public Schools. You will check in to the Fenway Center at 11:30 a.m. and then volunteer from noon to 1 p.m. Volunteers will be done in time to attend Northeastern’s annual Veterans Day ceremony, which will take place on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the university’s Veterans Memorial. Air Force Maj. Gen. Dwyer Dennis, program executive officer for C3I and Networks at the Hanscom Air Force Base, will deliver the event’s keynote address. Later in the day, the men and women’s basketball teams will tip off the 2016-17 season against Boston University. The women—winners of three consecutive games against their crosstown rivals—will tip off at 3 p.m. at the Cabot Center. The men—winners of two in a row and five of the past six against the Terriers—will play at 7 p.m. at Matthews Arena. In between the basketball games, show your Husky pride at the so-called “event in the tent,” located in the Matthews Arena parking lot. In addition to the opportunity to meet some of Northeastern’s student-athletes, there will be music, food, and giveaways. Saturday, Nov. 12 There are more athletics on tap for Saturday. First, watch the women’s hockey team battle Merrimack at 2 p.m. at Matthews Arena. Then flock to the Cabot Center Quad for a 5 p.m. tailgate party—there will be free food, giveaways, and a photo booth. Finally, return to Matthews Arena to watch the men’s hockey team face off against Notre Dame at 7 p.m. After the games have ended, meet up with your friends at the Snell Library Quad to make your own s’mores and relax by the warmth of a fire. “S’more Homecoming” will begin at 9 p.m.
