If you’re spending winter break in Boston, here are some fun events and activities to try.

City of lights

Colorful arrays of lights have been strung up across the city to celebrate the holiday season. And what better way to spend a night than by taking a stroll around Boston and checking out these illuminated signs of the season.

Commonwealth Avenue, Newbury Street, Copley Square, Boston Common, Faneuil Hall, and the Rose Kennedy Greenway are just some of the spots around town with holiday light displays.

Winter wonderland

The first snow of the season has yet to come, but when it does you better believe it will pack a punch. And with snow comes timeless winter activities like ice skating, skiing, and sledding.

The go-to-place in Boston to lace up your skates is the Frog Pond on Boston Common. The rink opens at 10 a.m. every day, and skate rentals are available.

For sledding, you can’t go wrong with Corey Hill Outlook Park in on Summit Avenue, in Brookline, Titus Sparrow Park on West Newton Street in the South End, or the Sugar Bowl next to Jamaica Pond at Jamaicaway and Perkins Street.

White christmas at the library

Get into the holiday spirit with a free screening of the 1954 classic White Christmas at the Boston Public Library’s Central Branch on Thursday, Dec. 24. Starring Bing Crosby, the movie starts at 2 p.m.

First night

Ring in 2016 with First Night Boston, the city’s New Year’s Eve extravaganza. A variety of fun festivities are scheduled for Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 throughout Boston, including musical performances, a procession to Boston Common that includes giant puppets and a sparkling dragon, and fireworks at midnight. Hockey night (and day) at Northeastern

The men’s and women’s hockey teams will return to action during the winter break with a day-night doubleheader at Matthews Arena on Saturday, Jan. 2. The women’s team will take on Dartmouth at 2 p.m., followed by the men’s team facing off with Quinnipiac at 7 p.m.

Men’s basketball also has a home game on Thursday, Jan. 7, at 7 p.m., against Colonial Athletic Association foe Delaware. Women’s basketball has two home games between now and Jan. 3: Boston College at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 28, and Towson at 2 p.m. on Jan. 3.
