September’s can’t-miss campus events by Joe O'Connell September 2, 2015 Share Facebook LinkedIn Twitter As the new school year gets underway, Northeastern University will host a number of campus events during the month of September that you won’t want to miss. Welcome Week – This multi-day celebration of students’ arrival on campus from Sept. 2 to Sept. 13 gives new and returning students plenty of ways to thrive during their first days on Huntington Avenue this semester. Student Employment Job Fair – Students looking to get a job while at Northeastern should head over to the Student Employment Job Fair on Wednesday, Sept. 9, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Curry Student Center Indoor Quad. Myra Kraft Open Classroom – This unique semester long course, which is free and open to the public, is based in the School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs and brings experts to campus to shed light on topics of particular significance. This year’s course will focus on the transformative decade of the 1960s. The first class is Wednesday, Sept. 9, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in West Village F, Room 20. Sharing global experiences – Northeastern students will have two chances this month to learn more about the breadth of global experiential opportunities available to them. The Study Abroad Fair–scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 10, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Curry Student Center Indoor Quad—will give students the opportunity to hear about exciting study abroad opportunities from the university’s global partners. Students who’ve participated in a global co-op will be at the Curry Student Center Indoor Quad on Tuesday, Sept. 22, to share their experiences with their fellow students. The event, dubbed the Global Co-op Fair, will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. For more information contact Kaitlin Hurley, global experience coordinator, at k.hurley@neu.edu. Entrepreneurial spirit – If you have the entrepreneurial bug, the Entrepreneurs Club may just be the student organization for you. The group’s first meeting of the semester is on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. MassChallenge CEO and founder John Harthorne will be the featured speaker and will discuss the milestones of starting a company. The Entrepreneurs Clubs is also hosting a kickoff event on Monday, Sept. 21, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Snell Quad. This showcase of Northeastern’s entrepreneurial ecosystem will include student clubs, faculty-led organizations, and all the other resources available to students who want to pursue entrepreneurship at Northeastern. Gallery 360 exhibit – Northeastern’s Gallery 360 will open an exhibit on Sept. 16 of work by Favianna Rodriguez. An artist, entrepreneur, and cultural organizer, Rodriguez is most known for her vibrant posters dealing with global politics, migration, globalization, and women’s rights. The exhibit, titled “The Multiverse of Identity,” will feature Rodriquez’s abstract work. Gallery 360 is located in Ell Hall with access from the Curry Student Center. Volunteer Fair – If you are looking for opportunities to give back to the community or want to get involved with a particular cause, check out the Center for Community Service’s Volunteer Fair on Friday, Sept. 18, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Centennial Common. Women Who Inspire – This speaker series was created to empower the next generation of women leaders in science, technology, engineering, and sustainability. On Monday, Sept. 21, at 5:30 p.m. in the Curry Student Center Ballroom, three female elected officials will discuss the challenges, risks, and rewards of their jobs in politics. Daynard Fellow lecture – This Northeastern University School of Law program brings nationally-recognized public interest leaders to campus to share how law can help promote public interest goals and make the world a better place. The Fall 2015 Daynard Fellow is civil rights attorney Thena Robinson-Mock, who will give a lecture on Monday, Sept. 28, at noon in Dockser Hall and then participate in a roundtable discussion on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at the same place and time. Xhibition Kitchen – Northeastern’s Xhibition Kitchen brings a “Food Network” flair to the campus dining experience. Throughout the semester, a variety of culinary experts will demonstrate their skills at the Stetson West venue. The first Xhibition Kitchen event of the school year will feature Avi Shemtov, author of The Single Guy Cookbook, on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at noon. Athletics – Northeastern sports are in full swing for the fall season, with all the teams expecting major success. Here are just a few of the many home sporting events this month: Field hockey will take on No. 18 UMass Amherst this Thursday, Sept. 3, at 5 p.m. at Dedham Field in Dedham, Massachusetts. Women’s soccer will host Maine this Sunday, Sept. 6, at 1 p.m. at Parsons Field. The Huskies will also host Dartmouth on Friday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m. Volleyball will return from the Stephen F. Austin Invitational to play UMass Lowell on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. at Cabot Center. The men’s soccer team will welcome Fairfield to Parsons Field on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 6 p.m., and will host No. 7 Providence, a Final Four team last season, on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 6 p.m. The men’s and women’s cross country teams will race in the Battle in Beantown on Friday, Sept. 25, at 3 p.m. at Franklin Park. Free shuttle buses to Parsons Field will be available to students for the men’s and women’s soccer games listed here.
