Live updates: Northeastern falls to Maine, 4-3, in second overtime of Hockey East semifinal

Cam Lund, Dylan Hryckowian and Andy Moore scored for No. 9 Huskies, who became the lowest seed to advance to the final four after upsetting No. 1 BC.

  2. It’s over. Black Bears defeat Huskies in second OT

    Maine has defeated Northeastern, 4-3, in the second overtime of their Hockey East semifinal at TD Garden.

    Nolan Renwick scored the winning goal 11:02 into the fifth period for the second-seeded Black Bears (23-7-6), who will play fourth-seeded UConn in the final at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow.

    The winner will earn the automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.

    Northeastern, the first ninth seed to reach the conference semifinals, finishes its season 14-20-3.

    The Huskies defeated Merrimack in double overtime in the first round before upsetting No. 1 Boston College in the quarterfinals.

    “Just getting to the final four teams … having two huge playoff wins, that’s something to be really proud of in this league,” Northeastern coach Jerry Keefe said after the game.

    Renwick was positioned at the left side of the crease where he redirected a pass from Charlie Russell. The goal was reviewed and upheld.

    Cam Lund, Dylan Hryckowian and Andy Moore had the goals for the Huskies, who upset top seed Boston College in the quarterfinals.

    Owen Fowler scored twice for Maine, while Luke Antonacci tied it with 7:16 left after the Huskies turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead.

    Cameron Whitehead made 57 saves for Northeastern, while Albin Boija had 33 stops for the Black Bears.

    Maine attempted 138 shots, 42 were blocked by the Huskies.

  7. Huskies, Black Bears headed to second overtime

    It will take five periods – at least – to decide tonight’s second Hockey East semifinal between Northeastern and Maine.

    The Huskies and Black Bears played a scoreless first OT. Both teams had their chances, but neither could score.

    So they will clean the ice, take a 15-minute intermission, and try again.

    The fans are getting their money’s worth.

    Shots in the first OT: 10 for Maine, seven for Northeastern.

    Totals for the game: 50 for Maine, 31 for Northeastern.

    Northeastern and Maine are headed to overtime with the winner advancing to the Hockey East championship.

    UConn is waiting for the winner – probably hoping this one lasts a while.

    The overtime clock will be set for 20 minutes. First goal wins it.

    The Huskies and Black Bears are still tied with 2 minutes left.

    Northeastern has called a timeout.

  14. Black Bears go on power play with 5:57 to go

    Maine is going on the power play.

    Northeastern defenseman Vinny Borgesi was called for high sticking with 5:57 left.

    The Black Bears are 0 for 2 with the man advantage so far.

  15. Maine ties it with 7:17 left in the third period

    Luke Antonacci has tied it for the Black Bears with 7:17 left in the third period.

    Overtime, anyone?

    The Black Bears hold a 35-21 advantage in shots.

    It should be noted that Maine coach Ben Barr lost his timeout when he challenged Moore’s goal at 15:31.

  16. Huskies still lead, 3-2, with 10 minutes left

    Northeastern is 10 minutes away from an improbable berth in the Hockey East final.

    A little more on Moore’s goal… 

    The sophomore has played in 67 college games, but had never scored before tonight.

    And where is Moore from? Cumberland, Maine.

  17. Moore’s first goal of season gives Huskies the lead

    And the Huskies have taken the lead with 15:31 left!

    Fourth-line center Andy Moore scored his first goal of his college career to give Northeastern a 3-2 lead.

    It was assisted by Nick Rhéaume and Vinny Borgesi.

    Maine challenged the goal, claiming goalie interference, but after video review, the goal stood.

  18. Lund pulls Huskies even: Northeastern 2, Maine 2

    Cam Lund has tied it for the Huskies!

    The junior’s 18th goal of the season with 49 seconds left in the second period has pulled Northeastern even, 2-2.

    And that’s the way the period ended here at TD Garden.

    Twenty minutes left to decide who faces UConn in tomorrow’s final.

    Dylan Hryckowian’s goal, assisted by Joe Connor and Lund, was the other goal of the period.

    The Huskies played two of the last three minutes shorthanded after a Jackson Dorrington interference penalty. Then Lund struck.

    Jacob Fowler has goals for Maine, one in each period.

    Goalie stats: Cameron Whitehead has 23 saves for the Huskies, Albin Boija 17 stops for the Black Bears.

  20. Huskies keeping it close, trail 2-1 in second

    Jerry Keefe hoped his team would keep it close – and it is.

    The Huskies are matching the Black Bears stride for stride in the second period. Shots are 6-5 in favor of Northeastern with 8:19 left.

    The Huskies top line of Cam Lund, Jack Williams and Dylan Hryckowian has been outstanding.

  23. Hryckowian’s goal pulls Huskies within a goal

    Dylan Hryckowian’s power-play goal at 4:01 of the second period has pulled the Huskies within a goal.

    Maine leads, 2-1.

    After a scramble for the puck in front of Black Bears’ goalie Albin Boija, Joe Connor slapped a shot into Boija’s pads, but Hryckowian followed with the rebound.

  24. Black Bears take 2-0 lead 2:04 into second period

    Owen Fowler has his second goal of the game for Maine.

    The junior deposited a rebound of a shot past Northeastern goalie Cameron Whitehead at 2:04.

    Fowler’s 10th goal of the season was assisted by Lynden Breen.

  26. Second period underway; some quick hits

    The second period is about to get underway here at TD Garden.

    While we wait for the puck to drop, some more quick first period stats:

    Northeastern had 10 shots, seven coming during two power plays. The Huskies took three shots during the other 16 minutes.

    Maine had 17 shots, six coming on one power play. So the Black Bears took 11 shots during the other 18 minutes.

    Harrison Scott has four shots to lead all players.

    Both teams have blocked five shots.

  29. Maine takes 1-0 lead on Fowler’s goal

    Owen Fowler has given the Black Bears a 1-0 lead.

    The Maine forward, who was called for an elbowing penalty at 11:55, exited the box and took a long pass from Harrison Scott.

    Fowler did the rest, skating in alone on Cameron Whitehead before beating the Huskies goalie along the ice at 14:02.

    Maine is outshooting Northeastern, 15-10.

  31. Huskies kill Black Bears’ first power play

    The Huskies killed the Black Bears’ first power play, the result of a Cristophe Tellier roughing penalty at 9:01.

    Cameron Whitehead was very busy. The sophomore stopped Harrison Scott twice, Nolan Renwick twice and a doorstep rebound by Lynden Breen.

    Maine is outshooting Northeastern, 14-7.

  32. Huskies, Black Bears scoreless halfway through first

    We are about halfway through the first period and the game is scoreless.

    There have been plenty of scoring chances, however. And Northeastern has had the better of the opportunities.

    Maine was whistled for the game’s first penalty, a hooking penalty by Luke Antonacci 4:97 in. The Huskies managed four (maybe five) shots while on the power play, and another soon after.

    On the other end of the ice, Northeastern goalie Cameron Whitehead has stopped all six Maine shots. Whitehead’s best save was a point-blank stop on Charlie Russell.

  34. The game is underway here at TD Garden

    And they are underway here at TD Garden. 

    Cam Lund, Jack Williams and Dylan Hryckowian start up front for the Huskies, Jackson Dorrington and Vinny Borgesi on defense, and Cameron Whitehead in goal.

    For Maine, it’s Thomas Freel, Harrison Scott and Josh Nadeu up front, David Breazeale and Brandon Chabrier on the blueline, and Albin Boija between the pipes.

  36. Huskies have played the Black Bears tough

    Warmups are done and we are about 20 minutes from puck drop. The Huskies are dressed in their black jerseys, the Black Bears in white.

    These two teams last met on Jan. 31 in Orono with Maine prevailing, 3-1, with an empty-netter. Sophomore Eli Sebastian scored Northeastern’s goal, the first of his career, while classmate Cameron Whitehead made 29 saves.

    That game, of course, was a Beanpot tuneup for the Huskies, who opened with an 8-2 loss to Boston College.

    Fast forward seven weeks and the Eagles are back in Chestnut Hill and the Huskies are a win away from the Hockey East final.

    Way back in October, Maine defeated Northeastern, 4-1 and 2-2 (shootout) at Matthews Arena.

  41. UConn defeats BU, 5-2, in first semifinal

    UConn defeats Boston University, 5-2, in first semifinal

    Joey Muldowney scored a natural hat trick – three straight goals in the third period – to lift the other Huskies over the Terriers.

    Ryan Tattle and Tristan Fraser scored the other UConn goals, while Cole Hutson and Kamil Bednarik scored for BU.

    Looking ahead, Northeastern lost both regular-season games to UConn – 5-2 in Storrs, Connecticut, on Feb. 28, and 7-1 at Matthews Arena on March 1.

  42. Six keys to a Northeastern victory

    Ninth-seeded Northeastern (14-19-3) will face second-seeded Maine (22-7-6) in a Hockey East semifinal at 7:35 p.m. Thursday at TD Garden.

    The winner will face Connecticut or Boston University in the final on Friday with the champion earning an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.

    Cameron Whitehead

    The sophomore goalie (2.74 GAA, .910 save percentage) made 30 saves in the Huskies’ 3-1 quarterfinal upset at No. 1 Boston College. He has won three of his last four starts. “We have a great goaltender,” Northeastern coach Jerry Keefe says.

    Jack Williams

    The junior leads the Huskies with 41 points (16 goals and 25 assists). He has a goal and five assists against Maine.

    Lund’s second-period goal at BC — his team-leading 17th goal this season — opened the scoring in the semifinal.

    Northeastern opened the tourney with a 3-2 win at Merrimack on a double-overtime goal by Hryckowian, the sophomore’s 16th of the year.
