Fans had to wait three decades for the Northeastern men’s hockey team to win the Beanpot championship last year. They only had to wait another 12 months for the next one.

Jubilant Huskies fans basked in the glory of another Beanpot title Monday night at TD Garden in Boston after Northeastern defeated Boston College 4-2 in the championship game. The victory marked the first time since 1984-85 that Northeastern won back-to-back Beanpot titles.

“It’s absolutely unbelievable,” said Justin Harriman, a 2002 graduate who founded the student section for Northeastern hockey games, called the DogHouse. “Last year I was sobbing in tears, and this year I’m in total disbelief.”

A record number 1,823 Northeastern students purchased tickets to the Beanpot final to see the red and black make history. Fans chanted “Back-to-back” and “We want three” as they strode out of the arena on Monday night, high-fived, and screamed with delight.

“I’m super happy. Back-to-back champs,” shouted Stav Rones, a second-year student. He said he and his friends were sitting behind the Northeastern bench during the game, pounding all the glass all night to cheer on their team.

The Huskies fans were loud early and often during the game.

Mary Forde, a fifth-year student who plays the piccolo in Northeastern’s Pep Band, had cheered on the Huskies’ semifinal victory over Boston University last Monday.

“I went to the game last week too, so I’m really pumped,” Forde said prior to the game. “We brought a lot of people.”

The band played “Stacy’s Mom,” much to the delight of the Huskies fans, who cheered loudly and sang along. The 2003 song, by the band Fountains of Wayne, is considered by Northeastern hockey fans to be the team’s unofficial tune.

Even when BC scored twice in the third period to narrow the score to 3-2, the Huskies faithful continued to cheer on their team. They erupted with 5.3 seconds remaining in the game when Northeastern’s Zach Solow scored an empty-net goal to seal the win, and again moments later when the final buzzer sounded.

After the game, Sofia Tanoglu danced in a hallway of the TD Garden with her arms in the air.

“It’s crazy,” she said. “This hasn’t happened in so many years, and then it happens two times in a row. As a fourth-year student, to see it is pretty amazing.”
