Photo by Adam Glanzman/Northeastern University March is chock-full of can’t-miss campus events, programs, and guest speakers, including “Mythbuster” Grant Imahara, two career fairs, and a conference on fake news. Global co-op The Career Development department’s spring 2018 Global Co-op Networking Fair will be held on Thursday, March 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Curry Student Center Indoor Quad. Attendees will have the opportunity to talk to fellow students who’ve completed a co-op abroad, learning what it’s like to live and work in another country. ‘Mythbuster’ Grant Imahara—the roboticist and TV host—will give a talk in Blackman Auditorium on Thursday, March 1 at 7 p.m. Imahara is best known for co-hosting “Mythbusters,” the Emmy-nominated show in which he and other Hollywood special effects experts attempted to debunk urban legends by directly testing them. Tickets, free for undergraduate students and $7 for graduate students, faculty, and staff, can be found on the myNortheastern platform. Women Who Empower The Women Who Empower program will hold three events around the world on Thursday, March 8 in honor of International Women’s Day. The event in Boston, titled “Succeeding Together,” will be held at 6 p.m. in the Alumni Center. It will be moderated by Binja Basimike, BHS’12, MPH’14, a healthcare business systems consultant at Synthesis Health. The panel will comprise Juliette Mayers, DMSB’88, president and CEO of Inspiration Zone LLC; Ashley Paré, CPS’09, owner of Own Your Worth; and Jessica Yamas, MS/MBA’12, the New England Women’s Business Enterprise National Council director at the Center for Women & Enterprise. Shani Mootoo Shani Mootoo—the writer, visual artist, and filmmaker who was born in Ireland, grew up in Trinidad, and has lived in Canada for nearly 40 years—is Northeastern’s spring 2018 Visiting Distinguished Writer. Mootoo will host a reading and book signing on Tuesday, March 13 at 5:30 p.m. in the Raytheon Amphitheater; an undergraduate writing workshop on Wednesday, March 14 at noon in 440 Curry Student Center; and a film screening on Wednesday, March 14 at 6 p.m. in 10 Behrakis. Career fairs Career Development will hold two industry-specific career fairs in March. The “Business and Entrepreneurship” career fair will take place on Tuesday, March 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the indoor quad. The “Social, Nonprofit, and Government” career fair will take place on Friday, March 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the indoor quad. Xhibition Kitchen Northeastern Dining’s Food Network-style series features cooking demonstrations and tastings in Xhibition Kitchen, which is located in the Stetson West Eatery. March’s slate of events will feature cookbook authors David and Dawn Ludwig (March 14); Amie Bakery’s Amie Smith (March 21); and Fazenda Coffee and Caffe Strega (March 22). Trump and privacy A panel of top privacy and surveillance experts from Northeastern and beyond will discuss the Trump administration’s approach to privacy on Wednesday, March 14 at 5:30 p.m. in 250 Dockser Hall. The 90-minute discussion will be moderated by Woodrow Hartzog, a Northeastern professor with joint appointments in the School of Law and the College of Computer and Information Science. Social service panel “The Nonprofit and Government Sector Black Professionals Panel,” sponsored in part by the John D. O’Bryant African American Institute’s Legacy Mentoring and Leadership Program, will convene in the Cabral Center on Wednesday, March 14 at 8 p.m. The participants—African American nonprofit leaders and civil servants—will share stories and advice with students interested in social service careers. Gallery 360 Northeastern will host a reception at Gallery 360 on Thursday, March 15 at 5 p.m. for four artists whose work is or will be on display in the space. “In Line,” an exhibition by Keith Maddy, a collage artist, and Mary Hughes, a painter who works as an administrative officer in the School of Architecture, will be on display from March 14 to April 23; an untitled video exhibition by Julia Hechtman, a lecturer in the Department of Art + Design, will be on display from March 14 to April 23; and a new selection of oil on canvas paintings by artist Brian Hart will be on display until March 12. Fake news The NULab for Texts, Maps, and Networks will host its second annual conference on Friday, March 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Raytheon Amphitheater. The event—titled “Fake News/Real Knowledge: Histories, Structures, Futures”— is free and open to the public, but registration is required. A number of Northeastern faculty members will deliver presentations on their research—including Nicholas Beauchamp, assistant professor of political science, who will discuss his examination of the spread of hate speech on Twitter, and Meg Heckman, assistant professor of journalism, who will present her investigation of how stories are adopted by local news outlets. Yochai Benkler, of Harvard Law School, will deliver the keynote address, giving a talk titled “The Architecture of Disinformation in the American Public Sphere.” Robert D. Klein Lecture Jerome Hajjar, CDM Smith Professor and Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, will deliver the 54th Robert D. Klein Lecture on Monday, March 19 at 3 p.m. in the Raytheon Amphitheater. His talk is titled “Urban Engineering: New Designs for a Resilient and Sustainable Future.” Undergraduate Research Forum The College of Social Sciences and Humanities will hold its fourth annual Undergraduate Research Forum on Thursday, March 22 at 2 p.m. in 310 Renaissance Park. Individual presentations will be 10 to 15 minutes long, followed by the opportunity for presenters to discuss their work with attendees. Mass incarceration A symposium on the past, present, and future of mass incarceration in Massachusetts will be held on Friday, March 23 from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Cabral Center. The all-day program, organized by faculty in Northeastern’s Program in Public History and its School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, will convene scholars, policymakers, and correctional officials to explore everything from rehabilitation programs to parole reform. Women’s, gender, and sexuality studies The fifth annual Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies symposium will be held on Friday, March 23 from 10 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. in the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex. Titled “Gender and the Rise of the Global Right,” the all-day program will feature presentations by a mix of local and international academics, attorneys, political researchers, and community organizers. Space is limited and free registration is required. Ruderman Lecture David Myers, the president and CEO of the Center for Jewish History, will deliver the 2018 Morton E. Ruderman Memorial Lecture on Monday, March 26 at 5:30 p.m. in the Raytheon Amphitheater. His lecture—titled “Why is Jewish history so important today?”—will argue for the need to study Jewish history at this crucial cultural and political moment. Athletics The women’s hockey team will play New Hampshire in the semifinal round of the Hockey East tournament on Saturday, March 3 at 4:30 p.m. at Matthews Arena. If the Huskies win, they will advance to the championship game on Sunday, March 4 at 1:30 p.m. at Matthews Arena. The No. 8 men’s hockey team finished the regular season with a sterling 21-8-5 record and secured a first-round bye in the Hockey East tournament. The Huskies will return to the ice on Friday, March 9 at 7 p.m. at Matthews Arena for the first game in a best-of-three series in the quarterfinal round. The baseball team, which is off to a 4-3 start, will play its first three home games of the season in March. The Huskies will play Hartford in their home opener on Tuesday, March 13 at 3 p.m. at Friedman Diamond in Brookline, Massachusetts, and then take on Holy Cross in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 17.
