Photo by Matthew Modoono/Northeastern University Guess who’s back, back again. This month marks the return of Northeastern athletics, with the soccer and field hockey teams opening their seasons. Plus, don’t miss meditation and yoga on Mondays and a free tour of the Museum of Fine Arts. Free MFA exhibition tour This exhibition presents a selection of the Museum of Fine Arts’ exceptional holdings of works by Alfred Stieglitz, the great American impresario of photography at the turn of the 20th century. Register online for the tour, which is on Friday, Aug. 4, at 4 p.m. Mindful Mondays Come for the yoga, stay for the meditation. This weekly series offers mindful yoga and guided meditation every Monday in the Sacred Space in Ell Hall. The next session is Monday, Aug. 7, at 6 p.m. Open Newbury Street Famed Newbury Street will become a pedestrian-only walkway over a series of three Sundays this summer. Check it out this month on Aug. 13 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., when the street will be closed to vehicle traffic between Arlington Street and Massachusetts Avenue. Thesis competition The Three Minute Thesis, hosted by Graduate Women in Science and Engineering, is an academic competition that challenges doctoral students to describe their research within three minutes, with one static slide. The competition, on Thursday, Aug. 17, at 2 p.m. in West Village, is open to all graduate students, and audience members are welcome even if they do not want to present. Register online in advance. Machine learning in healthcare conference The Machine Learning in Health Care conference is an annual research meeting that exists to bring together two usually insular disciplines: computer science and medical research. To this end, the symposium, on Friday, Aug. 18, at 8 a.m. in the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex, includes invited talks, poster presentations, panels, and ample time for thoughtful discussion and robust debate. Frog Pond Spray Pool The Frog Pond Spray Pool is a Boston family favorite for city dwellers and visitors alike. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the beauty and history of the Boston Common. The spray pool is open through Sept. 4. Free Yoga at the pond is also offered on Thursdays, from 6 to 7 p.m. through Aug. 31. Athletics The wait is over. Northeastern sports teams are back in action this month. Men’s soccer kicks off its season with two exhibition games at home. The team will take on the University of Massachusetts on Sunday, Aug. 13, at 2 p.m. and Bryant University on Saturday, Aug. 19, at 2 p.m. Women’s soccer will also get underway in earnest this month, with its home opener against Stony Brook on Friday, Aug. 18, at 6 p.m. At the end of the month, the Huskies will host Harvard on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at 6:30 p.m. Field hockey will open its season this month with an exhibition game against Albany on Friday, Aug. 18, at 1 p.m.
