From Election 2016 discussions to cooking demonstrations, this month is chock-full of events that whet almost any appetite. Here’s what we have on our calendars.

Myra Kraft Open Classroom

This weekly discussion of issues affecting the presidential election is held each Wednesday during the semester, from 6 to 8 p.m., in West Village F. The next installment is Wednesday, Oct. 5, when criminology and security experts will discuss the topic, “Making America (Feel) Safe.”

Xhibition Kitchen

The semesterlong Food Network-style series features cooking demonstrations at the university’s exhibition kitchen in Stetson Hall.

This month, the series will feature Amy Kritzer, author of Sweet Noshings, on Wednesday, Oct. 5; celebrity chef Robert Irvine on Monday, Oct. 10; Devoured author Sophie Egan on Wednesday, Oct. 12; and a pumpkin carving contest on Friday, Oct. 21.

The annual pumpkin carving contest will be followed by a “pumpkin patch,” where the creations will be on display, and students can vote for their favorites. The deadline to apply for the contest is Tuesday, Oct. 18.

10^th annual Bouvé Health Fair and Flu Shot Clinic

Get your free flu shot and check in on your overall health at this annual event, held this year on Wednesday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Curry Center Indoor Quad. Three thousand flu shot vaccinations will be available for the Northeastern community during the health fair this year, the most in event history. Cholesterol testing, smoking cessation information, and free health screenings will also be available.

21^st Century Diplomacy: Housekeeping, bridge building, and apple pie

Matthew Barzun, U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom,will be joined by Northeastern Young Global Leaders president Mohammed Al Wazzan, for a conversation on how today’s diplomats can foster connections in a post-Cold War climate of global uncertainty and strife. The event is Thursday, Oct. 6, at 6 p.m., on the 17^th floor of East Village.

Fall Career Fair

Get a jumpstart on your job search at the annual Fall Career Fair, scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 6, from noon to 4 p.m., at Cabot Center. Students will be able to meet face-to-face with representatives from more than 260 employers looking to hire for full-time and co-op positions.  Also, Career Development be staffing a “Practice Your Pitch Table,” where students can speak with career advisors about what questions to ask employers and how to practice a 30-second pitch.

LASO presents: Diane Guerrero

The Orange is the New Black and Jane the Virgin actress, immigration reform advocate, and Boston native will address students for Hispanic Heritage Month on Friday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m., in Blackman Theater. Tickets are required and can be purchased on myNEU.

New mural on campus

On Tuesday, Oct. 11, artist Susan Cer­vantes and artists from Precita Eyes Murals will unveil a new instal­la­tion of public art­work on campus. A cel­e­bra­tion of the community-​​based mural will be held at the Latino/​a Stu­dent Cul­tural Center from 3 to 5 p.m.

NU Service Day

During NU Ser­vice Day on Sat­urday, Oct. 15, stu­dents can vol­un­teer to be part of one of more than 30 ser­vice projects across Boston, ranging from cleaning up at several local parks to helping at the Boston Book Festival to painting at a local school. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Reg­ister in advance.

Marine Science Center Open House

Join the Marine Science Center for its biggest event of the year—an open house that will include tours of the facility, interactive activities, lectures on various topics, and exploration of the tide pools found at the center. The open house is Saturday, Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Marine Science Center in Nahant, Massachusetts. ]

Forbes 30 Under 30 Summit

The Forbes 30 Under 30 Summit will make a stop at Blackman Audi­to­rium as part of a multi-​​day, multi-​​venue, city­wide event bringing together Boston’s next gen­er­a­tion of entre­pre­neurs. Northeastern will be home to the “Impact” stage, one of five stage across Boston hosting events. Those events on campus focus on “unconventional paths to making the world better, brighter, and more connected,” including discussions, a documentary film festival, and musical performances. Events will be held on Monday, Oct. 17, from 2 to 5 p.m., and Tuesday, Oct. 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration is required.

Parent and Family Weekend

Show your rel­a­tives around during Parent and Family Weekend, from Friday, Oct. 21, through Sunday, Oct. 23. A variety of campus events will be held throughout the weekend.

Head of the Charles

Attending the Head of the Charles is very nearly a rite of pas­sage for everyone living in Boston. The regatta will pit some of the world’s best rowing teams—including Northeastern’s—against each other for ulti­mate glory. This year, the two-​​day rowing event will be held on Sat­urday, Oct. 22, and Sunday, Oct. 23.

On Fire to Hire Startup Expo

The expo is an event spon­sored by the Center for Entre­pre­neur­ship and Edu­ca­tion, giving stu­dents the oppor­tu­nity to net­work with star­tups looking to hire interns, co-​​ops, and full-​​time employees. This semester’s expo will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 25, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., for undergraduates and alumni, and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for graduate students. Registration is strongly encouraged, but not required.

John Coltrane tribute concert

This year’s annual John Coltrane Memo­rial Con­cert, “An Evening of Bal­lads and Blues,” cel­e­brates its 30^th anniver­sary at North­eastern on Sat­urday, Oct. 29. The musical cel­e­bra­tion of the late jazz legend will start at 7:30 p.m. in Blackman Audi­to­rium. Pur­chase tickets in advance from the Uni­ver­sity Box Office.

Athletics

There are plenty of oppor­tu­ni­ties this month to see the Huskies in action. Here are some games to put on your calendar:

The men’s ice hockey regular season home opener against Bentley will take place at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, at Matthew’s Arena.

The women’s ice hockey team takes on Hockey East rival Boston University at Matthews Arena on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m.
