THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT

Innovative research by pharmaceutical sciences professor Heather Clark and her students shows how an iPhone could be used to monitor nanosensors injected into the skin that fluoresce based on a person’s glucose and sodium levels in the blood — a noninvasive way for patients with diabetes or kidney problems to monitor their condition. Photo by Christopher Huang.

ICE CARVING

Teams of students and staff sculpted, picked and chain sawed their way through giant blocks of ice at the annual International Ice Carving Competition in Krentzman Quad. (For more, watch the video here.) Photo by Mary Knox Merrill.

KOSTAS INSTITUTE

In September, President Joseph E. Aoun presided over the unveiling of the George J. Kostas Research Institute for Homeland Security at the university’s campus in Burlington, Mass. REGIONAL CAMPUSES

In October, Northeastern launched a regional campus in Charlotte — the first in series of campuses planned for selected American cities. The campuses will offer advanced degrees and foster research collaborations aligned with local economic development goals. President Joseph E. Aoun said the initiative will advance a model of higher education “beyond the traditional boundaries of place” to meet the growing challenges of higher education in the 21st century. Photo by Patrick Schneider.

FROM CO-OP TO CAREER

An international co-op experience in Greece inspired fourth-year chemistry major Victoria Ronga (seen here inserting a sample into the probe of a nuclear magnetic resonance machine) to pursue a career as a food chemist. Photo by Mary Knox Merrill.

PROFILES IN INNOVATION
This fall, Northeastern unveiled the new Presidential Speaker Series entitled Profiles in Innovation. The events, hosted by President Joseph E. Aoun, bring the world’s most creative minds to campus for conversations on innovation and entrepreneurship. The first two speakers were iRobot cofounder and CEO Colin Angle and airspace sculptor Janet Echelman, and fun videos featuring President Aoun were shown at each event.
